Derris scandens Powder Extract: Derris Scandens’s formal name is Derris Scandens Benth. is a well-known Asian medicinal plant and a rich source of bioactive chemicals. Derris Scandens’s formal name is Derris Scandens Benth., also known as “Tao-Wan-Priang” in Thai, is a climbing shrub found throughout Southeast Asia, including India, Malaysia, China, and Thailand. Derris scandens (Roxb.) Benth. has been utilized in Thai traditional medicine recipes for pain relief. As a herbal medicine, dry stem powder and ethanolic extract are also indicated in Thailand’s National List of Essential Medicines (NLEMs) for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain.

Since its use as traditional medicine and a listed product in NLEM, current research suggests that D. scandens could be considered as a potential alternative to NSAIDs for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. The use of D. scandens as an alternative medicine could help Thailand’s local economy and may be safer than NSAIDs in the long run. Because of the similarities in their adverse effects, the use of D. scandens and NSAIDs at the same time should be avoided.

However, because the overall quality of current trials is low, and the follow-up duration is short, strong conclusions on the efficacy and safety of D. scandens cannot be reached.

Current evidence should be interpreted with caution, and further high-quality research are still needed. Furthermore, the dose response impact and long-term use of standardized D. scandens products should be explored further.
